City Power warns residents against substation tampering

City Power is warning residents against opening substations and trying to fix faults as it’s dangerous and illegal.
This comes after a resident from Crosby near Mayfair in Johannesburg was hospitalized after a mini substation blew up in his face.
He illegally opened the substation and tried to operate it to restore electricity.
City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena says around 23 incidents of electrocutions have occurred in the past year.
“This is the situation that happened in Crosby, where people tried to operate our network. The network is not supposed to be fiddled with or operated by anyone,” he said.
“Now there’s a person in the hospital. The box blew up in his face. We see this more often in informal settlements with about 23 incidents in the past year.
“It’s a serious problem that we are facing as City Power.”
