The state’s first witness in the Mthokozisi Ntumba case has described what she witnessed on the day Ntumba died.
He was killed during protest action in Braamfontein in March last year, while leaving the doctor’s office.
Four policemen are on trial in connection with his murder.
At the time, students were protesting against fees and exclusion, due to historical debt.
Police officers Tshephisho Kekana, Cidraas Motseothatha, Madimetja Legodi, and Victor Mohammed each face a single count of murder and three counts of attempted murder.
The state’s first witness is a clerk from the clinic where Ntumba went to consult a doctor. She was on duty on the day Ntumba died.
Lerato Mokoena said when Ntumba stepped out of the office Mokoena heard gunshots. She said she saw a big police vehicle parked on the street not far from where the learners were.
Mokoena described how she saw Ntumba lying on the ground and took his belongings for safekeeping. After asking a security guard to watch over him, she ran back to the clinic to call for help.
During cross-examination by the defense Mokoena did concede that she didn’t see who shot Ntumba.
The four policemen are have been released on R8,000 bail each.
The trial has been set down for 30 days. More than 20 witnesses are expected to be called to testify.
