In-camera testimony to continue on Monday #StateCaptureinquiry

A former Crime Intelligence official, previously known as Colonel Naidoo, testified via an audio link to the State Capture Commission and will continue on Monday. He has since assumed a new identity under witness protection. The much-awaited testimony of Lt-Col Naidoo via audio link only, to protect his identity, provides a first-hand account of someone who worked within the belly of the Crime Intelligence beast.

The looting of an off-the-books Crime Intelligence slush fund by senior officials was in focus. The timeframe of his testimony begins in October 2011, when he has two meetings with Hawks investigators on the 18th and 19th of October.

After realising he can trust them, he spills the beans on the rampant looting of Crime Intelligence’s Secret Services Account by senior CI members including himself – putting in false claims for R100,000.

In other news – Rwanda welcomes the first group of African refugees from Libya

They will be housed in a transit centre in Rwanda before being resettled elsewhere unless they agree to return to their home countries. A group of 66 African refugees and asylum-seekers have arrived in Kigali from Libya, the UN said, the first in what could be thousands of people being helped to flee the conflict-torn country.

The move follows a pledge by President Paul Kagame in 2017 to offer a “home” to Africans after reports emerged of the torture, sexual violence and forced labour they suffer in Libya. Earlier this month, Rwanda signed a deal with the African Union (AU) and the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR agreeing to take in African refugees and asylum-seekers stranded in Libya. Read more
