Lesotho has granted Elon Musk’s Starlink a decade-long license to operate in the country, aiming to boost its digital infrastructure and deepen ties with the United States. The Lesotho Communications Authority announced the move on Monday, calling it a “significant step” in transforming the country’s communication sector to drive economic growth and innovation.
Boosting US Ties Amid Tariff Tensions
The approval comes shortly after US President Donald Trump imposed a steep 50% reciprocal tariff on Lesotho — one of the highest globally — which was later paused for 90 days, though a 10% levy remains in place. Lesotho, entirely surrounded by South Africa, exported $364 million more to the US than it imported in 2022.
Key Exports at Risk
Lesotho’s economy relies heavily on exports like diamonds and apparel, including jeans produced for US brands such as Levi Strauss & Co. The potential impact of US tariffs poses a threat to local jobs and economic stability.
Government Response to Economic Threats
In response, Prime Minister Sam Matekane said the government would work to mitigate the damage by lobbying US lawmakers for transitional tariff relief and creating a more welcoming environment for American investment — including for companies like Starlink.

Lesotho’s decision follows Somalia’s similar move to license Starlink as both nations look to strengthen diplomatic and economic relationships with Washington while expanding digital access across underserved areas.
