SCOPA considers calling SSA officials to explain alleged public funds abuse

The State Security Agency and several of its former principals could be called to Parliament to explain the misuse of public funds for party purposes.

Last week, President Cyril Ramaphosa told the Standing Committee on Public Accounts in a letter he has no direct knowledge of this abuse.

The committee’s investigating claims by suspended ANC MP Mervyn Dirks after a leaked audio recording where Ramaphosa appears to confirm the use of slush funds.

It’s understood Parliament’s legal advisors are now suggesting the committee turn its focus to the State Security Agency for more information.

They recommend that Scopa wait for the release of the third Zondo Commission’s report before sending questions to former State Security Ministers.

Scopa is also being advised about the Auditor-General’s report to Parliament and the difficulties in auditing the SSA’s financial statements, and tracing the illegal flow of funds for party purposes.
