Spreading misinformation carries heavy penalties

Spreading fake news and inciting violence could lead to severe legal repercussions. One legal expert says those found to have committed such offences could face years in prison. Even retweeting can also land you in trouble.
Legal expert Ulrich Roux said, “if people are found to be sending messages on social media which incites violence or incites unlawful damage to property could be held liable.
They could be charged with infringement of the Cyber Crimes Act, and they could face a fine or imprisonment of up to 15 years. Roux cautioned that people resharing false information will not be shielded.
