Police Commissioner says high-calibre weapons used in Soweto tavern shooting

Harrowing scenes in Soweto after 15 people were shot and killed at a tavern in Orlando.

Gauteng Police Commissioner Elias Mawela said masked men entered the liquor outlet in Nomzamo park in Orlando East.

They opened fire on patrons using high-caliber weapons.

“We were called in the early hours of the morning, around 12.30 am. When we arrived on the scene, 12 people were confirmed dead,” he said.

Mawela said 11 others were taken to the hospital. Two remain in critical condition.
