Trucks Caught Fire in Benoni After Welding Mishap
In a separate dramatic incident in Benoni, a fuel truck company experienced a devastating fire after a welding operation went dangerously wrong.
The Ekurhuleni Emergency Management Services (EMS) responded swiftly after receiving reports of multiple fuel trucks catching fire, raising concerns about explosions and further destruction.
Fire Details and Emergency Response
Upon arrival, emergency personnel discovered the main articulated trailer carrying 40,000 litres of petrol fully engulfed in flames. In addition:
-
A second trailer contained 15,000 litres of petrol.
-
A rigid truck, which also caught fire, carried another 15,000 litres of petrol.
-
A second articulated truck was empty but posed a serious risk due to vapour explosion hazards.
Ekurhuleni EMS spokesperson, William Ntladi, confirmed that the fire started when sparks from welding operations ignited nearby vehicles.
Firefighters Contain the Blaze
A team of 20 firefighters from four different fire stations was dispatched to combat the fire. Firefighters used foam as an extinguishing agent to counteract the volatile nature of petroleum-based fires.
Due to their swift and coordinated efforts, they managed to bring the fire under control within a few hours, preventing what could have been a catastrophic explosion in the area.
Authorities are now investigating whether proper safety protocols were followed during the welding operation and if negligence played a role in the incident.
Ongoing Investigations
Both the Soshanguve crime scene and the Benoni fire highlight ongoing concerns about violence and safety hazards in South Africa. While police work to uncover the motive behind the violent attack, fire authorities are assessing the cause and responsibility for the fuel truck fire.
SAPS and emergency services urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or unsafe practices that could lead to violence or hazardous incidents.
