Sonia Mbele finally speaks out on her Crown Gospel Awards outburst

Sonia Mbele has explained that she was “possessed by the Holy Spirit” when she loudly chanted “Hallelujah!” at this Sunday’s Crown Gospel Awards – a moment which had the country talking.

You knew it would be a meme as you watched it. Sonia Mbele was on stage at the Crown Gospel Awards, ready to present the Best Gospel Jazz award Sipho Makhabane, AKA Big Fish. But all the attention was on Sonia after her hilarious outburst which began with her admitting that she got lost backstage, and ended with not one but two loud, screechy chants of “Hallelujah!”.

Mzansi Twitter laughed in unison as many suspected that the actress might have been under the influence of something. Some claimed she had smoked something while others thought she had indulged in a drink or two.

To her credit, Sonia has stood by her actions and expressed no regret for her outburst.

She has, however, set the record straight and revealed that she was not drunk, but rather ‘consumed by the Holy Spirit. She explained to Daily Sun, “Once I was on stage I got possessed by the Holy Spirit. I was not under the influence of anything. I had not been to Durban for some time and I was just too excited,” Her partner on stage, however, was less impressed. Sipho was reportedly shocked by Sonia’s unexpected tangent. It is alleged that he wished that she had stuck to the script that they had been handed.
