Sizwe Twala in line to make his debut for Amakhosi

Kaizer Chiefs had a new face on the bench in their narrow Absa Premiership 1-0 win over Baroka FC on Saturday, a striker who was promoted to the first team earlier this month following his exploits in the reserve league.

Sizwe Twala was in line to make his debut for Amakhosi, but in the end, he was an unused substitute. With Samir Nurkovic and Dumisani Zuma missing out, coach Ernst Middendorp needed options from the bench and the 22-year-old forward was brought in and could still keep his place in the team when they host Golden Arrows on Tuesday.

Middendorp, speaking to the media at the end of the game, shed some light as to why he would have brought Twala in.

He did not single him out, however, but Nurkovic and Zuma were some of the casualties in the 2-0 victory away to AmaZulu on Heritage Day.

“I think with the travelling (to Durban) and then playing just three and a half days later, knowing we had a very rough game, a lot of players at the moment were not available and will probably only be back on Tuesday. I think it is very important to have players like Dumisani Zuma available as an option as an impact player. He certainly would have been very crucial,” Middendorp told reporters.

Twala finished as the joint top goal scorer in the Multichoice Diski Challenge last season and began training with the senior team in pre-season.
