Sithembile Zimba died after she was struck by lightning

Yesterday authorities started assessing the damage caused by heavy storms that hit parts of KZN on Saturday. On Sunday, Sithembile Zimba (24) from Mamfemfetheni Village in Bergville died after she was hit by lightning while inside a rondavel at her home.
Her mum, Khatheleni (55), told Daily Sun Sithembile was with her five siblings when the lightning struck.

“The others quickly got out and escaped, but Sithembile didn’t. She was just lying on the floor,” said Khatheleni.

She said she was in the main house when the children told her what had happened. We hired our neighbour’s car and rushed to hospital, but on arrival we were told she was dead,” she said. Co-operative Governance MEC Sipho Hlomuka sent his condolences to the Zimba family. He said on Sunday, disaster management teams were placed on high alert after the weather services warned of severe thunderstorms.

The MEC warned residents to be careful as heavy rains were expected in the Ugu District and eThekwini Metro this week. Our teams are on the ground and we are urging residents to be cautious and to double check the weather forecast before taking any long journeys,” he said.

Provincial police spokeswoman Captain Nqobile Gwala said an inquest docket was being investigated by the Bergville police.
