Ilitha Labantu says life sentence for Siphokazi Booi’s killer a victory

A life sentence handed down to a man who killed his girlfriend in Mbekweni near Paarl has been described as a victory.
Three years after Siphokazi Booi’s body was found, her partner has been sentenced to life behind bars.
Sithobele Qebe, known as Rasta, was arrested in September 2021, shortly after the 27-year-old’s dismembered body was found in a wheelie bin that had been set alight.
The Ilitha Labantu organization’s Siyabulela Monakali said: “This sentence marks a significant victory for justice, allowing the Booi family to finally find closure and mourn their loved one. Ilitha Labantu views this outcome as a crucial milestone in the fight against gender-based violence.”
The sentencing comes as the country marks Women’s Month when the spotlight is shone on the fight against gender-based violence and femicide.
