Court hears gun of alleged serial killer Sifiso Mkhwanazi’s father was used in woman’s murder

The Johannesburg High Court has learnt that a gun belonging to the father of alleged Johannesburg serial killer Sifiso Mkhwanazi was used in one of the 2022 murders committed by his son.

Mark Khumalo is the state’s second witness in the murder trial against his son, who was arrested for the murders of six women believed to be s.e.x workers.

In his admission to authorities, Mkhwanazi said he gained access to his father’s safe where he stored his firearm and used it to kill one of the s.e.x workers.

While being cross-examined by the accused’s defence counsel, Khumalo was asked how Mkhwanazi managed to remove the gun from his safe if Khumalo claimed to carry the key to the safe on his person at all times.

In response, Khumalo said he only learnt about his gun being used by authorities. which led to him requesting for the gun to be taken for ballistics testing.

Khumalo also revealed there was a second gun found on his property during Mkhwanazi’s arrest.

“As far as I know, my gun was intact, and when I found out that one of the victims was shot. I discussed with Captain Sander to send my gun to ballistics – there was only mine, but theirs was two”

The state is expected to bring out more witnesses as in its attempt to secure a conviction.
