Sibanye-Stillwater miners brought to surface

More than 1,500 miners at Sibanye-Stillwater have been safely brought to surface.

Earlier about 1,800 employees were stuck underground Sibanye-Stillwater’s Thembelani Shaft in Rustenburg.

“The shaft inspection confirmed that it was safe to hoist employees from the 14th level of the Thembelani shaft. More than 1,500 employees have been safely brought to surface, with the remaining employees being gradually hoisted to surface,” the company said in a media statement.

Sibanye-Stilwater said there were no injuries reported.

The miners were stuck underground after rails, which were being transported down its Thembelani shaft via a conveyance, fell down the shaft at its platinum operations.

It said it will continue to give updates.
