2 shot dead in Pietermaritzburg as fun night out ends in tragedy

A fun night out ended in tragedy after two people were shot dead in two separate incidents while returning from a students’ party early on Sunday morning.

The incidents, which took place 30 minutes apart, occurred outside Harry Gwala Stadium and on Alexandra Road, claiming the lives of a 40-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman, who is believed to be a student.

The first incident took place at around 2 am just outside Harry Gwala Stadium, near AB Jackson fields, where a social gathering for university students was being held.

According to uMgungundlovu District Police spokesperson, Sergeant Sifiso Gwala, said the body of a 40-year-old man, Simphiwe Sibhiko was found lying on the ground with two gunshot wounds — one to the back of his head and another to the stomach.

He said it is alleged that Sibhiko arrived at the event with his partner.

The deceased went to his car, opened it for his partner, and put on music for her to listen to. He then walked away from the car with other people who were attending the party. The partner fell asleep and was woken a bit later [with the news] that her partner had been shot.

He added that Sibhiko’s firearm, which he had brought with him from home, was missing, together with his cellphone.

The second incident took place at 2.30 am in Alexandra Road, during which Snenhlanhla Dlamini (23) was shot dead while returning from the event at Harry Gwala Stadium.

Gwala said Dlamini was found lying on her back and that she had been shot in the left side of the head.

He said, according to Dlamini’s boyfriend, who was present during the incident, they were walking down Alexandra Road from the event along with other friends trailing behind, when they were approached by two unknown men, one of whom was carrying a firearm.

The men took the couple’s cellphones and then the man shot Dlamini in the head and fled the scene on foot.

Gwala said two cases of murder are being investigated, and no one has been arrested yet.
