Sad scenes: Night of fun ends in tears as 5 friends burnt to death in a shack fire
They were last seen having fun and drinking in a friend’s shack. But hours later, residents of Site B in Khayelitsha, Cape Town were shocked when they saw flames eat the shack on Friday 18 February, killing friends, Nolufefe Zongile (30), Mkhululi Tovana (45), Sinovuyo Chali (25), Eric Libalele (34) and Anitha Bhontsi (24).
Nolufefe’s sister, Siviwe Xhalanga, (39) who lives in the same yard as her sister, said she last the group around 10pm before she went to sleep.
“They were still drinking and had two candles lit in the shack. I don’t know what happened afterwards. After midnight, I woke up to screams and some noise.
That’s when I realized that the shack was on fire,” said Siviwe.
Anitha’s cousin, Nangamso (33) said she was drinking with the deceased earlier in the day, but decided to go home.
She said she is shocked that her lovely cousin died just like that.
“My cousin was a very energetic young lady. She loved joking. I don’t know what happened and it’s sad that none of them survived to tell us what happened,” said Nangamso.
City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue spokesman, Jermaine Carelse, said Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 1:50am that an informal structure was on fire in Bhemye Crescent.
“Although firefighters managed to quickly extinguish the blaze, they came across the bodies of five people who had sustained fatal burn wounds,” said Carelse.
Cops spokesman Captain Frederick van Wyk said an inquest case was opened for investigation after a shack caught on fire on Friday.
“Five people were burnt to death. The cause of the fire is unknown. Investigations continue,” said Van Wyk.
