The governing party says steps have been taken to ensure communities receive services.
Speaking at the opening of the 55th national conference, party President Cyril Ramaphosa says those elected to positions such as municipal mayors must be properly vetted.
The president says it’s concerning that national government has had to intervene and take over the running of municipalities.
“Steps are now being taken to ensure that public servants possess the necessary skills and experience to be able to serve the people of South Africa,” Ramaphosa said.
“Local government is vital to the developmental role of our state. It’s a concern that the report from the Auditor-General points to maladministration in many municipalities.
“There’s been an intense focus on work to improve governance, financial management and service provision in municipalities.”
