The State in the Senzo Meyiwa trial has promised lengthy cross-examination of one of the accused on Tuesday morning.
Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya has entered the witness box in the trial within a trial.
The process, which kicked off four months ago, is to establish the admissibility of confession statements signed by Sibiya and his co-accused, Bongani Ntanzi.
Sibiya and Ntanzi are among five men being tried for the 2014 murder of the Bafana Bafana captain in what the State believes was a contract killing.
When State advocate Ronnie Sibanda rose to begin cross-examination on Monday, he asked Sibiya why he only mentioned for the first time in court that he had been assaulted by police for Meyiwa’s murder as far back as in 2019.
So far, this has been the theme of his cross-examination, as he pointed out what he called Sibiya’s failure to dispute important details from the testimonies of State witnesses through his lawyer, Thulani Mngomezulu.
“Mngomezulu can answer for himself – I am speaking for myself.”
Sibiya insisted he signed the confession statement that he was given by police to save his life.
