Court records from 2021 in the Boksburg Magistrates Court have shown that two of the accused in the Senzo Meyiwa murder complained about being assaulted while in police custody.
The court spent time on Friday listening to recordings from those proceedings.
The defence seeks to prove that one of the accused, Bongani Ntanzi, was never represented by a lawyer identified as Dominic Mjiyako.
Mjiyako was with Ntanzi when he signed an alleged confession before a magistrate on his involvement in the murder of the Bafana Bafana captain.
In the recording from 5 March 2021, Mthobisi Mncube and Bongani Ntanzi can be heard complaining about being assaulted while in police custody.
At the time, Mncube was held at the Johannesburg prison while Ntanzi was at a police station in Pretoria.
This has been a recurring theme in Ntanzi’s version that he was assaulted by police on multiple occasions in order for him to plead guilty to Senzo Meyiwa’s murder.
Also in the recording, the fourth accused, Mthokoziseni Maphisa, can be heard questioning his arrest and prosecution for Meyiwa’s murder, saying the people who should be in the dock are not because they have money.
This week the court heard that two of the accused revealed that Meyiwa’s girlfriend, musician Kelly Khumalo, was the one who ordered a hit on him.
