Accused 1 in Senzo Meyiwa case claims police never read him his rights

Accused number 1 in the Senzo Meyiwa trial, Muzi Sibiya, says the police never read him his rights following his arrest. Sibiya has been on the stand in the trial within a trial under way at the High Court in Pretoria.

He is appearing alongside four other accused for the murder of the Bafana Bafana captain. Sibiya has been questioned by state prosecutor Ronnie Sibanda if all the officers that took the stand lied about explaining his rights to him.

Sibanda: Do you recognise that document?

Sibiya: Yes, but I don’t know its name.

Sibanda: It is a notice of rights. You say this was given to you in Valeria?

Sibiya: I was given this document but they didn’t explain it to me.

Sibanda: So, all those who said they explained your rights to you they were misleading this court?

Sibiya: I do not have a right to say someone is lying, the court would make that decision. I was not explained any rights.
