Role Summary: The Senior Counsel will be involved in a diverse range of legal activities in support of the GE Gas Power business in Southern Africa.
Essential Responsibilities:
We are seeking an experienced commercial counsel with substantial experience in infrastructure projects (including the pre-development, development, operations and dispute phases, preferably in the energy sector) with a high energy level and commitment to success and strong business partnership skills
The role will require working closely with business teams and other functions in a matrixed environment to achieve commercial and strategic goals of the GE Gas Power businesses and the broader GE Africa activities
The role will require a strong commitment to integrity and professionalism, and passion for excellence
Our desired candidate will have strong command of international commercial law, including working knowledge of the principal international conventions and the uniform commercial code, as well as public procurement law
The role will require availability to travel (national and international)
The ideal candidate will have superior advocacy and communication skills, including the ability to effectively and efficiently communicate in writing and orally, an aptitude for practical negotiation, the capability to think clearly and quickly under pressure, the composure to satisfy multiple and often competing interests and ability to share lessons learned with teammates
Qualifications/Requirements:
LLB, Juris Doctorate or equivalent from an accredited law school or equivalent knowledge or experience
Broad knowledge of law and commercial legal practice in the Southern Africa region
Qualification to practice as a lawyer in South Africa
At least six years of legal post-qualification experience or equivalent, preferably in a law firm or corporate legal department
Substantial experience in the energy sector
Experience with EPC terms and conditions, project contracts management, dispute and claims resolution preferably in the energy sector
Transactional experience in domestic and international contract drafting and negotiation
Substantial experience working in different cultures and an open and tolerant mind with respect to diversity
Record of dedicated and successful teamwork, excellent interpersonal and diplomatic abilities
Must have valid authorization to work full-time without any restriction in the role’s location

Ability to resolve legal issues quickly and effectively

Ability to work well independently and in a team setting
Working Language of Portuguese is an advantage
