Security beefed up at railways stations. This comes after relentless attacks on trains in Western Cape. Nzimande said the unit was not a substitute for the railway police.
Transport Minister Blade Nzimande launched a security unit to look after trains on Friday. The unit will focus on combating cable theft and attacks on commuters.
“We want to multiply the impact,” he said. “Years ago, Cape Town Metrorail was one of the best, but it has deteriorated rapidly from 2015,” said Nzimande.
“Some members of the community know who is burning trains, stealing copper and destroying infrastructure. Law enforcement alone is not enough: the community has to come forward,” he said.
Western Cape Premier Helen Zille told the new recruits: “You are the people to help us establish rail safety and security. “You are very important to every commuter in the city.”
Mayoral committee member for transport Brett Herron said: “Protection of our rail infrastructure is absolutely vital to keep our city moving.”
Nokuthula Mathuthu (48) from Langa said: “I hope this will ensure fewer delays.”
