Search for 21-year-old man presumed drowned at Scottburgh beach in KZN

Search for 21-year-old man presumed drowned at Scottburgh beach in KZN! Emergency services are tirelessly searching for a man who went missing at sea near Scottburgh on KwaZulu-Natal’s south coast. The incident occurred on Monday evening, around 7 PM, at Scottburgh Point Main Beach.

Search and Rescue Efforts

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) reported that the missing man is a resident of aMahlongwa. An NSRI Rocky Bay crew member raised the alarm after eyewitnesses reported the man’s disappearance.

Craig Lambinon, the NSRI spokesperson, confirmed on Tuesday morning that search efforts were still underway.

“A police helicopter joined in an extensive air, sea, and shoreline search,” Lambinon stated. “Police divers, supported by NSRI Rocky Bay, Umdoni lifeguards, and IPSS Search and Rescue, are continuing with the search.”

He also extended the NSRI’s sympathies to the missing man’s family. “Thoughts, care, and compassion are with the family of the missing young man during this difficult time,” he said.

Tragedies Along KwaZulu-Natal’s Coast

The ongoing search highlights the increasing concern over water safety, particularly during the festive season when KwaZulu-Natal’s beaches become crowded with locals and tourists. Several drowning incidents have already marred the holiday period, drawing attention to the dangers posed by the ocean and other water bodies in the region.

Umhlanga Beach Drowning

One of the tragedies unfolded at Umhlanga Beach on November 25, 2024, when a man drowned while swimming. His body was recovered four days later at Clarkes Beach in Ballito.

According to the NSRI, the victim was one of two brothers from Limpopo who had been residing in Johannesburg. The pair had visited the Drakensberg for a holiday and decided to take a quick swim at the beach before catching their return flight to Johannesburg.

Tragically, the 23-year-old man, a student at Limpopo University, was caught in a rip current and could not make it back to shore. His disappearance and subsequent recovery serve as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of the ocean.

Montclair Pool Tragedy

In another incident, a young man in his 20s was found drowned in a residential pool in Montclair, south of Durban. ALS Paramedics reported that a friend discovered the victim unresponsive in the pool. Despite immediate attempts to resuscitate him, the young man could not be revived.

Raising Awareness About Water Safety

The recurring incidents have amplified calls for increased awareness and precautionary measures when engaging in water-related activities. Rip currents, in particular, remain a significant hazard on KwaZulu-Natal’s coastline.

Experts recommend the following to improve safety:

  • Swim only in designated areas: Lifeguarded beaches are equipped with trained personnel to respond in emergencies.
  • Understand rip currents: Educating swimmers about the dangers of rip currents and how to escape them can save lives.
  • Avoid alcohol before swimming: Alcohol consumption impairs judgment and increases the risk of accidents.
  • Buddy system: Swimming with a companion ensures help is nearby in case of emergencies.

A Community United in Grief

The Scottburgh incident has drawn attention to the need for more extensive safety measures along South Africa’s beaches. It has also highlighted the emotional toll such events have on families and communities.

Efforts to recover the missing man continue as emergency teams work against the clock. Meanwhile, thoughts remain with the affected families, as the tragedies underscore the importance of vigilance and safety in and around water.

As the search for the missing man persists, the collective hope is for a resolution that brings some measure of closure to his family and loved ones.
