Security guard shot dead in school yard

Night shift duty ended tragically on Thursday, 18 May for a security guard at Rantsane Secondary School in Makwane Village, QwaQwa, Free State. This was after an unknown man got into the school and allegedly shot and killed security officer, Tsoho Samuel Motlokoa (49).
According to a grade 12 pupil who witnessed the incident, the guard was shot four times in the neck and was declared dead at the scene. Called for comment, the Motlokoa family asked not to comment as news of Tsoho’s death are still hurtful.
Rantsane secondary principal, Sekgokgo Molete, described Motlokoa as a father figure for the pupils and a man who contributed immensely to the school’s results over the past five years.
Free State Education MEC, Makalo Mohale, said he was shocked to hear about the incident.
“This is the most painful news I have had to deal with since assuming office. On behalf of the entire education fraternity, I wish to send heartfelt condolences to Motlokoa’s family and friends,” he said. He called on the police to arrest the shooter.
Education spokesman, Howard Ndaba, said the department will provide psychosocial support to pupils and teachers.
Rantsane secondary is known for producing good matric results and the incident has shocked villagers.
Ward Councillor, Mongezi Malawane, said villagers are also fearing for their lives and also asked cops to arrest the shooter.
“We will introduce community patrols, who will work together with the police. We won’t allow such incidents to turn our village into a bloodbath,” he said.
Provincial police spokesman, Sergeant Peter Kareli, said an investigation launched immediately after the murder case was opened at Makwane Police Station.
“We plead with anyone who can help with information that can lead to the arrest of the perpetrator to come forward. We are working hard to track down suspect,” said Kareli.
