SA violence: School damage over R140 million

It will cost over R140-million to fix schools damaged and looted during the riots in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.

The staggering figure has been revealed in Parliament.

A total of 144 schools and educational facilities were affected by the unrest.

“I think we would all agree is one of the most devastating experiences we experienced in the past few days, not only to watch lives passing away unnecessarily but on our side, losing infrastructure,” said Angie Motshekga, Basic Education Minister.

“And you know for us, it’s one of the biggest challenges we have as a sector.”

KwaZulu-Natal’s education department says there’s simply no money to fix the damage.
