Western Cape not exempt from lockdown rules, says Bheki Cele

Police Minister, Bheki Cele has warned the Western Cape that it is not exempt from lockdown rules.

Cele has reacted to the City of Cape Town’s decision to take him to court after he stopped a film shoot at a local beach.

The minister says the Western Cape must adhere to the rules like the rest of the country and the province is not special.

“It is fine that they are taking us to court, we will meet in court, we are okay with that and that’s what they should have done,” he said.

“Also, they said they told us they got the permit from the municipality, we are running the country and there is a national regulation under the national disaster management act.”

Meanwhile, Cele says the decision to close beaches on the Garden Route was based on advice from the health department.

The Western Cape District has been declared a COVID-19 hotspot.

Its beaches are closed until 3 January 2021.
