SARS needs R800m to operate efficiently again

SARS Commissioner Edward Kieswetter says the revenue service needs R800-million to operate efficiently again.
He told Parliament’s finance committee there are up to 800 critical vacancies in the organisation, which he says is underfunded.
Kieswetter says the damage caused to SARS under its previous leadership will take significant effort, time and additional resources to rectify.
Last year, the Treasury allocation to SARS was cut from R10.2-billion to R9-billion.
That was part of government cuts to accommodate the funding of no-fee higher education for poor students.
Treasury director-general Dondo Mogajane says government does not have the money to increase the SARS budget.
