A reality TV personality and popular sangoma has been arrested for fraud.
This was after her former initiates started complaining about how she was treating them.
Some said they had to abandon their journey due to several reasons they encountered while being initiated by the sangoma.
Professor Sithembiso Shabalala of Mhlabuhlangene School of African Medicine told Daily Sun that more than 20 initiates had complained about their gobela.
And when they tried to speak to her about these allegations, she didn’t take it well.
He also said these allegations varied – from fraud to scamming and kidnapping.
“It’s our duty to protect the interest of traditional healers. As a result of the above allegations, we have commenced an inquiry and investigation as authorised by the Traditional Healers Act,” said Shabalala.
A former initiate said her stay during ukuthwasa with the suspect was hell.
She said after only a month, she saw enough to leave that place behind.
“The 15 of us used to stay in one backroom, in the middle of this pandemic,” she said.
She said that they were not taught anything – all they did was a cook for her family and boyfriend.
“We were given books and told to write. We didn’t even know what we were writing,” she said.
She claimed that at some point, she was called in for an interview where she got the job. But before she could go and sign the contract, she took a Covid-19 test that came back positive.
“I told her about the results, but she did not care. We had no sanitisers, no one wore a mask and no temperature would be recorded,” she said.
Another initiate told Daily Sun that she was there for seven months, which turned into the worst time of her life.
She said she only received three lessons, of which they had to beg for.
“She would tell us that she was tired and needed to rest. She would also fine us for every little mistake we did. I remember being fined for being late, even though I had reported that I was stuck in traffic,” she said.
She said that life had not been better at all, like it should when one had completed their journey.
“My ndumba burnt down with half of my mum’s house, and I lost my job. It’s like I took 10 steps back,” she said.
Gauteng police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that the suspect was arrested on Wednesday, 15 September, and charged with fraud.
She’s expected to appear in the Protea Magistrates Court on Thursday, 16 September.
