President Ramaphosa mourns the passing of Namibia’s founding president Sam Nujoma! President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Namibia following the passing of their founding president, Sam Nujoma.

Nujoma, a towering figure in Namibia’s struggle for independence, passed away in hospital on Saturday after a prolonged illness. He was 95 years old.

A Tribute to a Revolutionary Leader

In a statement, President Ramaphosa paid tribute to Nujoma’s legacy, describing him as a visionary leader who laid the foundation for Namibia’s freedom, democracy, and prosperity.

“South Africa is grateful for the extended lifetime with which Dr. Sam Nujoma was blessed, and South Africa will be forever grateful for the manner in which he dedicated the many decades of his life to serving his nation.”

The President also conveyed his deepest sympathies to Namibia’s founding First Lady, Kovambo Nujoma, as well as the Nujoma and Kondombolo families, who have lost a beloved father, husband, and leader.

A Legacy of Liberation and Unity

Nujoma played an instrumental role in the liberation struggle, not only for Namibia but for Southern Africa as a whole.

As a freedom fighter and statesman, he led the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) and fought tirelessly for Namibia’s independence from South African rule. After years of armed resistance, political negotiations, and international support, Namibia finally gained independence on March 21, 1990.

Nujoma then served as Namibia’s first president from 1990 to 2005, during which he established a stable government and strengthened ties with South Africa and other African nations.

“His leadership of a free Namibia laid the foundation for the solidarity and partnership South Africa shares with Namibia,” Ramaphosa emphasized.

A Strong Bond Between South Africa and Namibia

The bond between Namibia and South Africa runs deep, as both nations endured decades of colonial rule, racial oppression, and struggle before achieving independence.

Throughout his life, Nujoma stood in solidarity with South African freedom fighters, including Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo, and Walter Sisulu. His unwavering commitment to the anti-apartheid movement helped strengthen the regional liberation struggle, making him an inseparable part of South Africa’s own history.

Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya highlighted Nujoma’s significance, stating:

“As neighbours and compatriots, South Africa is united in grief with Namibians who have lost the leader of the Namibian revolution, who is inseparable from our own history of struggle and liberation.”

The loss of Nujoma marks the end of an era, as he was among the last of Africa’s great liberation leaders, whose sacrifices paved the way for freedom, peace, and democracy across the continent.
