SALGA concerned about load shedding

The prolonged power cuts are also having a devastating effect on rural communities.
SALGA says outages ultimately lead to a lack of water.
It says this forces local councils to hire water tankers, which they don’t have money for.
SALGA KZN chairperson Thamsanqa Ntuli says municipal budgets should be reviewed as they can’t cater to people’s needs.
He says power cuts have had a devastating effect not only on households, communities, and businesses but also on economic growth.
Ntuli says for municipalities to deliver services, they need budgets to regulate water in communities.
“The impact is when you talk about KZN local government or municipalities most of them are rural and they receive a minimal budget as rural committees are faced with a huge backlog on services,” he said.
“The issue of persistent load-shedding for almost four hours a day results to the failure to regulate sufficient water and regulate water in communities.
“Water tankers are very expensive, local government cannot sustain the supply water through water tankers. They have minimal budget which not equal to the service that they are providing to communities.
“Councillors are the ones who are facing the anger of communities as they need water and they are there as councillors but they can’t make provisions. Salga believes there is a need to consider other sources of energy provision, the unfortunate part is the budget they have cannot enable them to have other sources of energy. ”
