SAFTU calls for national shutdown

The South African Federation of Trade Unions and its allies will be taking to the streets in protest to air their grievances. The confederation’s spokesperson Trevor Shaku says the country’s working class is being sidelined and disregarded, hence the call for a national shutdown on 24 August.

“We also identified the issue around interest rate hikes which are making all the financial liabilities which are held by households with either retail or financial institutions.

“For instance, car loans, mortgages, home loans and just simple credit cards which people have in their households to boost the income they receive,” Shaku said.

“We think that the working class of the country, the poorest of the poor — 70 percent of whom depend on the public service and goods — are being disadvantaged from accessing quality and adequate public services in the public sector.
