Teachers union Sadtu wants all schooling to be suspended with immediate effect. The call to the Basic Education department follows a special meeting of the labour organisation’s leadership.
Sadtu is among various groups that are concerned about the safety of teachers and pupils, as the country’s COVID-19 infections continue to surge.
The Public Servants Association also wants schools closed. They have written to President Cyril Ramaphosa urging him to close schools immediately.
The union, which represents thousands of teachers and admin staff says it’s concerned by the surge in COVID-19 cases.
Several unions have raised concerns at the education department’s decision to resume teaching.
The PSA says there’s no rationale for limiting the number of people at church and funerals – but schools with more than1,000 pupils can open.
