BEMAWU to fight SABC retrenchments

The Broadcasting, Electronic, Media, and Allied Workers Union (BEMAWU) is taking the SABC to court over planned retrenchments.

The public broadcaster plans to let at least 600 permanent staff go and won’t renew the freelance contracts of more than a thousand people.

It is part of the company’s turnaround strategy.

BEMAWU wants to resume talks and is asking the labour court to prevent the SABC from issuing termination letters.
