South Africa’s wheelchair tennis player, Donald Ramphadi, has caused an upset in the first round of the Quad Wheelchair men’s singles at the Australian Open in Melbourne. Ramphadi beat American third seed, David Wagner, 6-3, 6-4 in the first round.
The victory sees the 30-year-old from the Limpopo province advance to the quarterfinals Ramphadi’s compatriot, world number five Kgothatso Montjane, is also through to the next round.
She advanced after her opponent, fourth seed Mokoko Ohtani of Japan, retired in the second set of their match. Montjane was leading 6-4 and 2-love when Ohtani through in the towel.
