SA Weather Service issues alert level 4 warning for KZN! The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued an alert level 4 warning for disruptive rainfall expected in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) from Tuesday, raising concerns about the possibility of fresh flooding in a province already struggling with the aftermath of previous storms.
Heavy Rainfall Predicted Across Most of the Province
According to SAWS, severe rainfall is expected over most parts of KZN, with predictions pointing to widespread showers and thunderstorms that could cause flash flooding, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas. The warning comes as the region continues to recover from earlier flooding incidents that left homes damaged and roads submerged.
The weather service urges residents to take the necessary precautions, particularly those living in informal settlements or near rivers and streams that may overflow.

Disaster Management Teams on High Alert
In response to the warning, the Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) Department in KZN has activated disaster management teams throughout the province.
Spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila confirmed that teams are on standby and monitoring the weather closely. “Disaster management teams continue to monitor inclement weather conditions across the province and will provide assistance where required,” he said.
Mzila also shared that MEC Bongiwe Sithole–Moloi and the department have urged residents to stay alert. “MEC Buthelezi has urged residents across the province to continue to be vigilant and exercise utmost caution,” he added.
Precautionary Measures Urged for Residents
Authorities are encouraging the public to:
-
Avoid traveling unless absolutely necessary during periods of heavy rainfall
-
Keep emergency numbers readily accessible
-
Stay updated on weather alerts from SAWS and local news channels
-
Move to higher ground if flooding occurs
The provincial government is expected to issue ongoing updates as the weather system develops.
A Province on Edge After Past Disasters
KwaZulu-Natal has suffered several devastating floods in recent years, with the April 2022 floods among the worst in South African history. Officials fear a repeat of such destruction and are working proactively to minimize the impact.
As of now, no evacuations have been ordered, but authorities warn the situation could change depending on the severity of Tuesday’s rainfall.
Residents are urged to stay informed and act quickly if conditions worsen.
