Former SA president Jacob Zuma undergoes surgery

Former President Jacob Zuma has undergone surgery at one of the hospitals outside the Estcourt Prison. Zuma who is serving a 15-month prison sentence was admitted to the hospital last week.

On Sunday (15 Aug) the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) confirmed that the former first citizen had undergone surgery on Saturday (14 August), with other procedures expected to follow.

In a statement, spokesman Singabakho Nxumalo said, “DCS can confirm that Former President remains in the hospital outside Estcourt Correctional Service where he’s serving a 15-month sentence.

“Mr Zuma underwent a surgical procedure on Saturday, with other procedures scheduled for the next coming days.”

As a result of the recent developments, the DCS said it was unable to predict the date which the Former President will be discharged outside the health facility and taken back to prison.

Nxumalo said, “As inmates are placed in correction centres involuntarily, the state has a total and inescapable responsibility and duty to care for them in a manner that does not violate or compromise their constitutional rights, which include access to health care.

“We appealing to all people to refrain from speculating on the health of Mr Zuma and allow medical practitioners space to continue providing quality healthcare to him.”
