SA population surpasses 63 million mark

South Africa’s population has surpassed the 63 million mark, ranking it in the 23rd spot on the global list of countries.

This is up by almost a million since the last estimate in 2023.

Statistics SA released the mid-year population estimates on Tuesday.

Stats SA said that births were the main driver of population growth in SA.

More than 1.2 million people were born between the last estimate and the current one, while about half a million deaths were recorded in that period.

The annual population growth has almost bounced back to pre-COVID levels when the difference between births and deaths was much smaller.

The number of people that migrated to SA increased, with Gauteng and the Western Cape estimated to experience the largest inflow of migrants.

This means Gauteng retains its status as the most populous province, followed by KwaZulu-Natal.

In terms of demographics, 51% of the population is female, while more than 80% are black.
