Ukrainian ambassador seeks urgent meeting with SA Defence Minister

Ukraine’s ambassador to South Africa, Liubov Abravitova, says her embassy is requesting an urgent meeting with Defence Minister Thandi Modise. This follows accusations made by the US ambassador that South Africa supplied Russia with weapons.

Reuben Brigety said on Thursday morning that the USA believes the transfer of ammunition was made during a naval drill exercise that Russia conducted in South African waters in February.

South Africa has maintained a neutral stance on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but this accusation flies in the face of that claim.
