SA COVID-19: No data to prove 6th wave

NICD epidemiologist Sibongile Walaza says there is no data to prove that the country is heading toward a sixth COVID-19 wave.

Walaza says data is inconclusive because testing rates have dropped significantly.

While infections have risen in some parts, she says there is no need to panic.

“Currently testing is very low in the country,” she said.

“However, we did see an increase in the percentage of people testing positive in the past few weeks which has now stabilized.

“This suggests that there was an increase in transmission, however, this has now gone down.”
