SA Council of Churches concerned over national shutdown

The South African Council of Churches is concerned about Monday’s planned national shutdown.

It says while everyone has a constitutional right to demonstrate, safety cannot be guaranteed.

The EFF is calling on people to join a countrywide shutdown.

It’s protesting against rolling blackouts and calling for President Cyril Ramaphosa’s resignation.

“The issue is that our experience has shown that it happens without necessarily been planned by the organizers,” said Bishop Malusi Mpulwana.

“We’ve had a horrible experience of July 2021, it’s very difficult for South Africans to put that behind their minds.

“But we do recognize that every South African, every organization has a right to demonstrate in our society.”
