Barcelona agrees to sign Robert Lewandowski for £42.5 million

Barcelona has finally struck a deal to land Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski for around £42.5million.

Xavi’s side have been chasing the Polish star all summer long but look to have clinched his signature with the player set to fly out to Spain on Saturday after both clubs agreed a fee.

Lewandowski – widely considered one of the best strikers in world football – could even sign in time to join Barcelona on their tour on the United States, with Bayern settling on a fee of £42.5m plus another five in variables.

He is expected to sign a three-year deal at the Nou Camp and the club are hopeful of wrapping up the transfer by Sunday.

Lewandowski has been intent on leaving Bayern – his home for the last eight seasons – after a fall-out with the club, telling them ‘my story is over’ and refusing to back down over his desire for a new challenge.

He has just one year remaining on his contract and Bayern may only have one opportunity to cash in on a player of his quality this summer.

The player has been training with Bayern during pre-season despite his desire to leave but will now be able to switch his attentions to Barca’s upcoming season – which begins with friendlies against Real Madrid, Juventus and New York Red Bulls in the States.

The 33-year-old has some of the best goalscoring figures of any striker in Europe and netted an incredible 50 goals from 46 appearances last season.

He was in line for the Ballon d’Or in the 2019-20 campaign after smashing in 55 goals from 47 games, but was unlucky that the ceremony was cancelled amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The following season he fired in another 48 but was beaten to the award by Lionel Messi.

Lewandowski will be reunited with former Borussia Dortmund strike parter Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang when his move to Barcelona becomes official. The pair scored 44 goals between them in the 2013-14 season.

Barcelona have already embarked on an impressive recruitment drive this summer, despite their financial struggles, having brought in Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rudiger, and Franck Kessie on free transfers.

Winger Raphinha has also arrived from Leeds United for £55m and Lewandowski would further bolster a squad hoping to battle rivals Real Madrid for the LaLiga title.
