Robber loses leg in Thokoza Cash in Transit Robbery

In a dramatic and violent turn of events, a cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery ended in disaster during the early hours of Tuesday, 6 May, in Thokoza, Ekurhuleni.

According to reports, one of the alleged robbers suffered severe injuries—including the loss of a leg and part of his spine—when an explosive device detonated during the attempted heist. The attack unfolded when the suspects rammed a silver BMW into the front of a Fidelity cash van in an effort to force it to a halt.

It is alleged that one of the suspects emerged from the vehicle carrying live explosives, which he intended to use to bomb the cash van. However, the device exploded prematurely, causing catastrophic injuries to the suspect, including a dislocated leg and spinal damage.

Failed Cash in Transit Robbery?

The loud explosion drew residents to the scene. A source revealed that despite the injury, the gang took their wounded accomplice with them and fled.

“Residents reported the incident to police after witnessing the Fidelity vehicle being bombed. The attackers left empty-handed,” said the source. “By the time police arrived, the suspects had already escaped in multiple vehicles. No arrests have been made at this stage.”

A nearby resident described the chaos of the Cash in Transit Robbery: “After hearing loud bangs and gunshots, I ran for my life. The scene was horrific. Some houses even had their windows shattered by the blast.”
