Mediator appointed in Richards Bay Minerals violence

The KwaZulu-Natal government has appointed a mediator to help resolve a deadly succession battle in Richards Bay. Mining giant, Richards Bay Minerals operates on land under the Mbuyazi tribal authority, where the dispute is happening.

The Mbuyazi family’s been plagued by a bitter traditional leadership succession battle for years.

The eruption of recent violence forced the Rio Tinto subsidiary to halt operations for nearly the whole of December.

Four workers have been shot and wounded in recent months going to and from work.

RBM has threatened to pull out of KZN and South Africa if the situation continues.

The company invests billions in the country’s ailing economy.

“We are working with the company management to ensure that as we stabilise the situation, they continue with the investment,” said KwaZulu Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala.

The Zulu Royal House’s now involved in talks to find a lasting solution.

Provincial authorities are calling a community imbizo on Sunday to discuss the ongoing violence and instability.
