Former Umhlobo Wenene FM Radio veteran Reverend Nomathamsanqa Rweqana is no more.
Nomathamsanqa died at a private hospital in Gqeberha on Tuesday, 6 January, after a short illness.
The 74-year-old broadcaster became popular through a couple of religious programmes including Mna nendlu yam siyakuMkhonza uYehova and Ndingu Yehova iGqirha Lakho where she gave people hope and faith.
Family spokesman Petros Majola told the publication the family was saddened by her death.
“She was still under the care of doctors after she was admitted to the hospital on 2 February, when she heard the voice of the one who presides over our lives calling her.
She said: “If you are the Lord tell me to come, the Lord said to her, come,” Majola said.
He said Reverend Rweqana had contributed greatly to people’s lives by healing wounded souls, mending broken hearts, healing broken families, and making her listeners realize the importance of family in the process.
Rweqana is known by her listeners for her midnight knocks which she uses as art to keep her listeners awake during the Ndingu Yehova iGqirha Lakho show.
She used her shows to ease the heavy burden of her listeners by giving them the word of God.
“Details of her funeral and memorial service will be communicated soon,” Majola said.
Tributes have been pouring in since news of Rweqana’s death broke.
Bulelani Mbovu said: “Rest in peace mother, you have done a good job of helping the community.”
Former SABC journalist Abongile Dumako offered his heartfelt condolences to the veteran’s family.
The radio veteran bowed out in 2022 after spending over 25 years on the airwaves.
