Refugees ordered off Cape Town streets

Hundreds of refugees and asylum seekers living on Cape Town streets have been issued with fines. They’ve also been warned that they’re in contravention of the Disaster Management Act. This as the government introduced a range of measures to help stop the spread of Coronavirus.

Stringent rules and regulations are being applied to effectively deal with COVID-19 and these include restricting the number of people at gatherings and fines being issued. We cannot underestimate this virus therefore every one of us in the Republic of SA has the responsibility to adhere to those declarations. Keep social distances. Wash your hands. Because God-forbid if the virus must reach some of our areas,” SA Human Rights Commissioner Chris Nissen.

Kanza Mayinga Sukinina, one of the refugees said, “us also we are scared of that disease. We are scared of that but us, we don’t want to stay in South African. It’s not our country. They hate us all the time. City officials say they’re compelled by law to implement the new emergency regulations while at the same time uphold municipal by-laws.

Living conditions worsen for Cape Town refugees

“I’ve briefed them regarding the Disaster Management Act and the regulations contained in the act that they are actually in contravention regarding that. We are also going to issue them with pamphlets regarding the Covidvirus and we have an operational plan in place to deal with the church as well as this area,” said City of Cape Town’s Robbie Roberts.

There are hundreds of refugees and asylum seekers still living inside the central Methodist Church on Green Market Square. At the moment, local integration is the only option on the table. A high-level inter-ministerial meeting and humanitarian agencies will meet this week to finalise an implementation plan.
