Call for Refinery workers to be compensated

An environmental group says it’s relieved by the suspension of refinery production in Durban.
The South Durban Community Environmental Alliance says while this is good news, Shell and BP must do right by their employees.
South African Petroleum Refineries has said that jobs will be spared as it’s exploring the sale of the plant.
But the environmental group isn’t buying this.
“The refinery management who have made huge profits in this country owe it to the workers who have deliberately slaved at these refineries and built up these refineries for many years… they owe it to them to actually come and upskill them and ensure that if they lose their jobs they get well compensated,” said Desmond D’Sa.
