The mother of Reeva Steenkamp – June – is set to speak in a sit-down interview about her quest for justice. And for the grieving woman, this means no parole for her daughter’s killer Oscar Pistorius.
According to the department’s statement, Oscar Pistorius was not, in fact, eligible for parole, as he did not serve his minimum sentence. Under South African law, offenders must spend at least half their sentence in prison before becoming eligible for parole. Pistorius shot and killed Reeva on Valentine’s Day in 2013.
However, Reeva Steenkamp’s parents June and Barry are, strongly opposing Oscar’s hopes of an early release.
In March, the South African Department of Correctional Services announced that a board had rejected Pistorius’s parole application.
According to the Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp Foundation, June will share her views on an Australian current affairs programme called Insights. The SBS TV show episode – titled Seeking Justice – is about familes of loved ones killed in tragic events.
During the show, June met with the mother of Harry Dunn, a teen who was killed in a road traffic collision in 2019. Steenkamp family attorney Tania Koen told The South African: “June was invited to their episode called ‘Seeking Justice,’ in which [host] Kumi Taguchi and studio guests explored the different concepts of justice, what justice means to different people and the journeys of those who have sought justice for themselves or their loved ones.
“Why seeing justice is so important, and what happens when it’s denied?” In a Facebook post last month, the foundation praised June for her “bravery” in speaking out. It shared: “Proud of you, June Steenkamp. You continue to inspire”. According to the Reeva Steenkamp foundation, the Insights episode starring June will air on 22 July 2023.
While the show airs on the Australian SBS TV network, viewers can also catch up via the show’s YouTube channel. b Pistorius – who was sentenced to 13 years and five months for the murder of Reeva – will face a new parole hearing in August 2024.
