Photos: A look at SONA 2024 red carpet
All roads led to the Cape Town City Hall in the Western Cape, where South African leaders converged for the State of the Nation Address (Sona) delivered by President Cyril Ramaphosa before a joint sitting of the two houses of Parliament.
This gathering has always been fraught with controversy, with critics and opposition parties questioning the necessity to waste large sums of taxpayers’ money on a one-day event.
Despite garnering criticism, visitors have traditionally graced the red carpet dressed to the nines for the occasion, and this year was no exception, with many arriving in stunning costumes.
This year, the trend was more like a leisurely stroll through a retirement village. That would happen when the average age of cabinet ministers is 61!
The carpet was graced with orthopaedic shoes stealing the spotlight ahead of Cyril Ramaphosa’s eighth State of the Nation Address. Move over, fashion-forward youth – this was the runway for the wiser and more experienced crowd.
Perhaps next year, we can expect walking frames and hearing aids to be the must-have accessories? But fear not! Amid the sea of vintage, there were glimmers of youth sparkling on the red carpet. Sona guests dazzled in embellished ensembles, proving that glamour knows no age. So, while orthopaedic shoes may have had their moment, it’s safe to say that the red carpet leading to the doors of the Cape Town City Hall was shared by both the seasoned and the sparkly.
While we understand that Sona is primarily about the president’s opportunity to give the nation direction, let’s face it – the fashion is the one thing we can always count on to deliver.
