Ramaphosa to Address Explosive Allegations by KZN Police Commissioner

SOUTH AFRICA – President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to personally investigate and respond to a series of bombshell allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. The shocking claims, made public during a media briefing in Durban, point fingers at some of the country’s most senior law enforcement officials, suggesting links between top police leaders and organised crime syndicates.

Commissioner Mkhwanazi accused Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and Deputy National Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya of being complicit in a criminal network allegedly controlled by powerful drug cartels and corrupt business figures. These individuals, according to Mkhwanazi, have infiltrated South Africa’s police and intelligence structures, severely undermining efforts to fight crime and corruption.

President Ramaphosa, speaking from the BRICS Summit in Brazil on Monday, acknowledged the gravity of the situation and confirmed that he had been unaware of the revelations prior to their public disclosure. However, he assured the nation that the matter will receive his direct attention upon his return to South Africa.

Ramaphosa Responds From BRICS Summit

“I was not aware of it, that it was coming and obviously it is a matter that I will deal with when I get home,” said Ramaphosa. “I will need to look at it more closely and have a thoroughgoing discussion with a number of people. Thereafter, there will be a clear way forward.”

Ramaphosa’s commitment to personally addressing the situation comes amid mounting calls for transparency and accountability at the highest levels of government and law enforcement.

Mkhwanazi’s allegations have sent shockwaves through South Africa’s already fragile trust in its law enforcement system. The KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner did not mince words during his briefing, stating that several high-ranking police officials are not only protecting criminal enterprises but are actively participating in their operations.

He further claimed that attempts to investigate or expose this alleged corruption have been met with resistance, intimidation, and political interference.

The media briefing also referenced multiple instances where police resources were allegedly redirected to benefit specific criminal syndicates. Mkhwanazi suggested that whistleblowers and honest officers trying to do their jobs have been deliberately sidelined or targeted.

The onus is now on President Ramaphosa to follow through on his promise of transparency and clean governance. Over the past few years, the president has made repeated commitments to stamp out corruption within government and state institutions. However, critics argue that progress has been slow, and systemic issues continue to fester.

This latest scandal provides a critical opportunity for Ramaphosa to reaffirm his leadership and take decisive action against alleged rot in the police ranks. Political analysts have noted that his response could either reinforce his credibility or raise further doubts about his ability to clean up state institutions.

Civil society organisations, anti-corruption watchdogs, and opposition parties have already called for immediate suspensions of the implicated individuals pending investigation. Some are demanding the establishment of an independent inquiry to probe the extent of alleged criminal collusion within police leadership.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) released a statement urging Ramaphosa to treat the matter with urgency and ensure that the law is applied equally, regardless of rank or political affiliation.

Meanwhile, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have accused the ruling African National Congress (ANC) of fostering a culture of impunity that has allowed such syndicates to thrive within the state.

As the country awaits Ramaphosa’s return, the stakes could not be higher. If handled decisively, this moment could become a turning point in the president’s fight against corruption and abuse of power. If ignored or downplayed, it risks becoming yet another chapter in South Africa’s long struggle with institutional decay.

The people of South Africa will be watching closely to see whether Ramaphosa will take meaningful steps to hold those in power accountable — or whether the nation’s justice system will once again falter under political pressure.
