The South African National Editors’ Forum (Sanef) has expressed shock following the robbery at Westside FM 98.9 MHz in Kagiso, Mogale City, in the early hours of Sunday, 22 August.
This is the second robbery in weeks, and the thugs who pounced the station held one of the presenters at gunpoint while making their way with equipment.
“The thugs targeted the community radio station and held a presenter at gunpoint as they ransacked valuables. These include five full sets of desktop computers, on-air and production personal computers, a speaker and three headphones,” Sanef said.
The robbery followed after newly revamped radio station HOT 102.7 FM came to the rescue of the community station, providing it with equipment while it was also awarded R20 000 by the Nat Nakasa Awards towards the purchasing of some of the damaged or stolen equipment during the unrest.
The forum said it was appalling that criminals would target a community asset that served residents of Kagiso and surroundings.
Revealing that a case had been opened with the police, the forum also asked the ops to speedily investigate to ensure the arrests and prosecution of the five thugs.
“We also appeal to the community to help the police with any information that can lead to the arrest,” said the forum.
Sanef called on South Africans to assist Westside FM 98.9 MHz with desktop computers, laptops or speakers as the station was seeking to retain the same quality of delivering much-needed information and content to the community.
